Tony Carnes is the founder and editor of A Journey through NYC religions. The award-winning web magazine produces about 150 features per year on religion in New York City. Over eight years of publication, A Journey has been visited by over 48 million unique viewers. 

The magazine pioneers a new way of doing religion reporting: journey as a methodology; sympathetic objectivity as a value; audience-centered usefulness; data-driven; and the development of cutting edge online technologies. His books include: New York Glory: religions in the city, edited with Anna Karpathakis, that is the first ever book providing an overall view of religion in New York City; and Asian American Religions. Changing borders and boundaries, both published by New York University Press. His The Chapel. The Great Heart of The Bowery Mission pioneered the idea of a coffee-table art booklet. The New School University has appointed him as Lecturer for the new course “Religion Storytelling for Journalists and Artists” to be offered in the Fall of 2018. His “Asian American Religions” will be published in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia on American Religions.
